Thereafter, deeply distressed and overwhelmed by grief for his son, the king died; seeing him dead, Devāpi withdrew to the forest.

english translation

Bāhlīka, having relinquished the kingdom, took up residence in his maternal uncle’s lineage; abandoning his father and brothers, he reached a prosperous city.

english translation

With Bāhlīka’s consent, Śaṃtanu—renowned in the world—assumed the kingship, O king, when his father had passed away.

english translation

In the same way, I too was set aside from the kingdom here, after deliberation by the prudent Pāṇḍu, because I was the elder but physically impaired, O Bhārata.

english translation

Yet Pāṇḍu, though younger, obtained the kingdom, O subduer of foes. If his sons were to be eliminated, this kingdom would follow that outcome; but when I am not allotted a share in the sovereignty, how can you seek the kingdom?
