कृतार्थाः सुभृता ये हि कृत्यकाल उपस्थिते । अनवेक्ष्य कृतं पापा विकुर्वन्त्यनवस्थिताः॥५-१४४-१६॥
For those who are well-maintained and whose aims have been fulfilled, when the time for required action arrives, it is blameworthy to act capriciously—without regard for what has already been done—through instability of purpose.
english translation
राजकिल्बिषिणां तेषां भर्तृपिण्डापहारिणाम् । नैवायं न परो लोको विद्यते पापकर्मणाम्॥५-१४४-१७॥
For those who commit offenses against the king and who appropriate the sustenance of their patron, neither this world nor the next is said to be available—such is the condition of those engaged in wrongful conduct.

धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्राणामर्थे योत्स्यामि ते सुतैः । बलं च शक्तिं चास्थाय न वै त्वय्यनृतं वदे॥५-१४४-१८॥
For the sake of Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s sons I will engage in combat with your sons, relying upon my strength and capability. I do not speak falsely to you.

आनृशंस्यमथो वृत्तं रक्षन्सत्पुरुषोचितम् । अतोऽर्थकरमप्येतन्न करोम्यद्य ते वचः॥५-१४४-१९॥
Preserving non-cruelty and conduct befitting a virtuous person, I therefore will not today carry out your request, even though it would be advantageous.

न तु तेऽयं समारम्भो मयि मोघो भविष्यति । वध्यान्विषह्यान्संग्रामे न हनिष्यामि ते सुतान् । युधिष्ठिरं च भीमं च यमौ चैवार्जुनादृते॥५-१४४-२०॥
Yet your undertaking toward me will not be futile. In battle I will not strike down your sons—Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīma, and the twins—except for Arjuna.
