उद्भावयस्व वीर्यं वा तां वा गच्छ ध्रुवां गतिम् । धर्मं पुत्राग्रतः कृत्वा किंनिमित्तं हि जीवसि॥५-१३१-१६॥
Either manifest your valor, or else proceed to that certain end. Having placed dharma before your sons, for what purpose do you continue to live?
english translation
इष्टापूर्तं हि ते क्लीब कीर्तिश्च सकला हता । विच्छिन्नं भोगमूलं ते किंनिमित्तं हि जीवसि॥५-१३१-१७॥
Your sacrificial offerings and charitable works are lost, and your reputation is wholly ruined—O coward. The basis of your enjoyments is cut off; for what purpose do you continue to live?

शत्रुर्निमज्जता ग्राह्यो जङ्घायां प्रपतिष्यता । विपरिच्छिन्नमूलोऽपि न विषीदेत्कथंचन । उद्यम्य धुरमुत्कर्षेदाजानेयकृतं स्मरन्॥५-१३१-१८॥
Check an adversary when he is sinking, and seize him by the leg when he is about to fall. Even if one’s very foundations are cut away, one should never despond; lift the yoke and draw upward, remembering what a well-bred horse can accomplish.
english translation
कुरु सत्त्वं च मानं च विद्धि पौरुषमात्मनः । उद्भावय कुलं मग्नं त्वत्कृते स्वयमेव हि॥५-१३१-१९॥
Establish fortitude and honor; recognize your own power to act. Raise up the lineage that has sunk—for indeed it has sunk because of you.
english translation
यस्य वृत्तं न जल्पन्ति मानवा महदद्भुतम् । राशिवर्धनमात्रं स नैव स्त्री न पुनः पुमान्॥५-१३१-२०॥
One whose conduct people do not speak of as great and wondrous is merely an augmenter of stores; in truth, such a one is neither woman nor man, lacking recognized human excellence.
