When hungry wanderers upon the earth reach a heroic lord of gifts and depart satisfied and secure, what dharma could be greater than that?

english translation

One person is won over by gifts, another by strength, and another by courteous truthfulness. Having attained sovereignty here, a righteous ruler should secure support from all sides by appropriate means.

english translation

A brāhmaṇa should subsist by alms; a kṣatriya should protect; a vaiśya should pursue the acquisition of wealth; and a śūdra should render service to them.

english translation

For you, alms-taking is expressly disallowed, and agriculture likewise is not deemed suitable. You are a kṣatriya—one who protects from harm—living by the strength of your arms.

english translation

O mighty-armed one, raise up again your paternal share that has sunk into loss. Do it by conciliation, by gifts, by strategic division, by lawful punishment, and also by prudent policy.
