ततस्तेराक्षसास्तत्रगत्वारावणमन्दिरम् । न्यवेदयन्पुरींरुद्धांरामेणसहवानरैः ॥ ६-४२-१
Then the Rakshasas proceeding to Ravana's abode informed that Rama along with the vanaras have occupied the whole of Lanka. [6-42-1]
english translation
रुद्धांतुनगरींश्रुत्वाजातक्रोधोनिशाचरः । विधानंद्विगुणंश्रुत्वाप्रासादंसोऽध्यरोहत ॥ ६-४२-२
On knowing that Lanka is occupied, the night ranger Ravana, became very furious and doubled the forces of Lanka for the protection and went to the top of Lanka palace. [6-42-2]
english translation
सददर्शावृतांलङ्कांसशैलवनकाननाम् । असङ्ख्येयैर्हरिगणैःसर्वतोयुद्धकाङ्क्षिभिः ॥ ६-४२-३
He observed a countless number of Vanara troops spread all over Lanka, mountains, and forests. [6-42-3]
english translation
सदृष्ट्वावानरैःसर्वांवसुधांकवलीकृताम् । कथंक्षपयितव्याःस्युरितिचिन्तापरोऽभवत् ॥ ६-४२-४
Seeing the earth made all brown with innumerable monkeys, Ravana in great perplexity reflected: "How can they be exterminated?" [6-42-4]

सचिन्तयित्वासुचिरंधैर्यमालम्ब्यरावणः । राघवंहरियूथांश्चददर्शायतलोचनः ॥ ६-४२-५
Ravana, thinking over for long, picking up courage, saw Rama's Vanaras with thoughtful eyes. [6-42-5]
