अगस्त्येनाभ्यनुज्ञाता जग्मू राजर्षयस तदा कृतवांश च मुनिः सर्वं लॊपामुद्रा चिकीर्षितम ।। ३-९७-१६ ।।

sanskrit

'After receiving Agastya's permission, the royal sages departed for their respective kingdoms. Agastya, in turn, utilized the wealth to fulfill all the desires of his wife, Lopamudra.' ।। 3-97-16 ।।

english translation

agastyenAbhyanujJAtA jagmU rAjarSayasa tadA kRtavAMza ca muniH sarvaM lòpAmudrA cikIrSitama || 3-97-16 ||

hk transliteration

[लॊप] कृतवान असि तत सर्वं भगवन मम काङ्क्षितम उत्पादय सकृन मह्यम अपत्यं वीर्यवत्तरम ।। ३-९७-१७ ।।

sanskrit

'Lopamudra then said, 'O illustrious one, you have fulfilled all my desires. Please beget a child for me, one endowed with great vigor.'' ।। 3-97-17 ।।

english translation

[lòpa] kRtavAna asi tata sarvaM bhagavana mama kAGkSitama utpAdaya sakRna mahyama apatyaM vIryavattarama || 3-97-17 ||

hk transliteration

[अ] तुष्टॊ ऽहम अस्मि कल्याणि तववृत्तेन शॊभने विचारणाम अपत्ये तु तव वक्ष्यामि तां शृणु ।। ३-९७-१८ ।।

sanskrit

'Agastya replied to her, saying, "O blessed and radiant one, your virtuous conduct has greatly pleased me. Listen to the proposal I wish to make regarding your desire for a child."' ।। 3-97-18 ।।

english translation

[a] tuSTò 'hama asmi kalyANi tavavRttena zòbhane vicAraNAma apatye tu tava vakSyAmi tAM zRNu || 3-97-18 ||

Would you prefer a thousand sons, or a hundred sons each equal to ten? Or perhaps ten sons, each equivalent to a hundred? Or would you desire a single son capable of defeating a thousand?

'Lopamudra replied, "Grant me one son, equal to a thousand, O wealth of asceticism! A single virtuous and learned son is far better than many who are wicked."' ।। 3-97-20 ।।

[lòpa] sahasrasaMmitaH putra ekò me 'satu tapòdhana ekò hi bahubhiH zareyAna vidvAna sAdhura asAdhubhiH || 3-97-20 ||
