[ल] इल्वलस तान विदित्वा तु महर्षिसहितान नृपान उपस्थितान सहामात्यॊ विषयान्ते ऽभयपूजयत ॥ ३-९७-१ ॥

'Lomasa said, 'Upon learning that the kings, along with the great Rishi, had arrived at the borders of his realm, Ilwala came out with his ministers and honored them appropriately.'' ॥ 3-97-1 ॥

english translation

[la] ilvalasa tAna viditvA tu maharSisahitAna nRpAna upasthitAna sahAmAtyò viSayAnte 'bhayapUjayata ॥ 3-97-1 ॥

तेषां ततॊ ऽसुर शरेष्ठ आतिथ्यम अकरॊत तदा स संस्कृतेन कौरव्य भरात्रा वातापिना किल ॥ ३-९७-२ ॥

'Then, O Kauravya (descendant of Kuru), that foremost among demons performed hospitality for them with his prepared brother Vātāpi.' ॥ 3-97-2 ॥

english translation

teSAM tatò 'sura zareSTha Atithyama akaròta tadA sa saMskRtena kauravya bharAtrA vAtApinA kila ॥ 3-97-2 ॥

ततॊ राजर्षयः सर्वे विषण्णा गतचेतसः वातापिं संस्कृतं दृष्ट्वा मेषभूतं महासुरम ॥ ३-९७-३ ॥

'Then all the royal sages became dejected and disheartened, seeing the great demon Vātāpi prepared (for eating) in the form of a ram/sheep.' ॥ 3-97-3 ॥

english translation

tatò rAjarSayaH sarve viSaNNA gatacetasaH vAtApiM saMskRtaM dRSTvA meSabhUtaM mahAsurama ॥ 3-97-3 ॥

अथाब्रवीद अगस्त्यस तान राजर्षीन ऋषिसत्तमः विषादॊ वॊ न कर्तव्यॊ अहं भॊक्ष्ये महासुरम ॥ ३-९७-४ ॥

'But Agastya, the greatest of the Rishis, spoke to the royal sages, saying, 'Do not succumb to sorrow; I will devour the great Asura.'' ॥ 3-97-4 ॥

athAbravIda agastyasa tAna rAjarSIna RSisattamaH viSAdò vò na kartavyò ahaM bhòkSye mahAsurama ॥ 3-97-4 ॥

धुर्यासनम अथासाद्य निषसाद महामुनिः तं पर्यवेषद दैत्येन्द्र इल्वलः परहसन्न इव ॥ ३-९७-५ ॥

'And the mighty Rishi then took his place on an exalted seat, while Ilwala, the prince of the Asuras, began to serve the food with a smile.' ॥ 3-97-5 ॥

dhuryAsanama athAsAdya niSasAda mahAmuniH taM paryaveSada daityendra ilvalaH parahasanna iva ॥ 3-97-5 ॥
