वैशंपायन उवाच ततॊ हृष्टमना राजा बृहदश्वम उवाच ह भगवन्न अक्षहृदयं जञातुम इच्छामि तत्त्वतः ॥ ३-७८-१६ ॥
'Vaishampayana continued: "King Yudhishthira, with a heart full of joy, then spoke to Vrihadaswa, saying, 'O illustrious sage, I wish to learn the art of dice from you.'"' ॥ 3-78-16 ॥
english translation
ततॊ ऽकषहृदयं परादात पाण्डवाय महात्मने दत्त्वा चाश्वशिरॊ ऽगच्छद उपस्प्रष्टुं महातपः ॥ ३-७८-१७ ॥
'The sage then imparted his knowledge of dice to the noble son of Pandu. After bestowing this wisdom upon him, the great ascetic proceeded to the sacred waters of Hayasirsha to take a bath.' ॥ 3-78-17 ॥

बृहदश्वे गते पार्थम अश्रौषीत सव्यसाचिनम वर्तमानं तपस्य उग्रे वायुभक्षं मनीषिणम ॥ ३-७८-१८ ॥
'After Vrihadaswa had departed, Yudhishthira, steadfast in his vows, learned from Brahmanas and ascetics who visited him from various directions, sustaining himself solely on air.' ॥ 3-78-18 ॥

बराह्मणेभ्यस तपस्विभ्यः संपतद्भ्यस ततस ततः तीर्थशैलवरेभ्यश च समेतेभ्यॊ दृढव्रतः ॥ ३-७८-१९ ॥
'Thus, he heard from Brahmanas, ascetics, and those endowed with prosperity, as well as from the revered sages of sacred waters and mountains, who gathered around him, that Arjuna remained steadfast in his ascetic vows.' ॥ 3-78-19 ॥

इति पार्थॊ महाबाहुर दुरापं तप आस्थितः न तथा दृष्टपूर्वॊ ऽनयः कश चिद उग्रतपा इति ॥ ३-७८-२० ॥
'And he learned that the mighty-armed Partha was undertaking such rigorous asceticism that no one before him had ever engaged in such intense penances.' ॥ 3-78-20 ॥
