कषुधा संपीड्यमानस तु नलॊ बहुतिथे ऽहनि अपश्यच छकुनान कांश चिद धिरण्यसदृशच्छदान ॥ ३-५८-११ ॥
'Afflicted by hunger, he ventured out in search of fruits and roots, with Damayanti following him closely. After many days of suffering from famine, Nala spotted some birds with golden plumage.' ॥ 3-58-11 ॥

स चिन्तयाम आस तदा निषधाधिपतिर बली अस्ति भक्षॊ ममाद्यायं वसु चेदं भविष्यति ॥ ३-५८-१२ ॥
'Then the mighty lord of the Nishadhas thought to himself, 'These will serve as my feast today and also my wealth.'' ॥ 3-58-12 ॥

ततस तान अन्तरीयेण वाससा समवास्तृणॊत तस्यान्तरीयम आदाय जग्मुः सर्वे विहायसा ॥ ३-५८-१३ ॥
'He covered the birds with the garment he wore, but as he lifted the cloth, the birds soared into the sky.' ॥ 3-58-13 ॥

उत्पतन्तः खगास ते तु वाक्यम आहुस तदा नलम दृष्ट्वा दिग्वाससं भूमौ सथितं दीनम अधॊमुखम ॥ ३-५८-१४ ॥
'Seeing Nala, bare and sorrowful, standing with his face downcast, the celestial beings spoke to him, saying .' ॥ 3-58-14 ॥

वयम अक्षाः सुदुर्बुद्धे तव वासॊर जिहीर्षवः आगता न हि नः परीतिः सवाससि गते तवयि ॥ ३-५८-१५ ॥
'O you of limited understanding, we are the very dice! We came here intending to take away your garment, for it displeased us that you should leave even clothed.' ॥ 3-58-15 ॥
