अत्र ते कथयिष्यामि यदि शुश्रूषसे ऽनघ यस तवत्तॊ दुःखिततरॊ राजासीत पृथिवीपते ।। ३-४९-३६ ।।

sanskrit

'Vrihadaswa said, "O great king, son of Pandu, you claim that there is no one more miserable than yourself. O sinless monarch, if you are willing to listen, I will share the story of a king who was even more wretched than you."' ।। 3-49-36 ।।

english translation

atra te kathayiSyAmi yadi zuzrUSase 'nagha yasa tavattò duHkhitatarò rAjAsIta pRthivIpate || 3-49-36 ||

अथैनम अब्रवीद राजा बरवीतु भगवान इति इमाम अवस्थां संप्राप्तं शरॊतुम इच्छामि पार्थिव ।। ३-४९-३७ ।।

sanskrit

'Vaisampayana continued, "In response, the king addressed the ascetic, saying, 'O illustrious one, please tell me the story of the king who fell into such a plight, for I wish to hear it.'' ।। 3-49-37 ।।

english translation

athainama abravIda rAjA baravItu bhagavAna iti imAma avasthAM saMprAptaM zaròtuma icchAmi pArthiva || 3-49-37 ||

'Vrihadaswa said, "O king, steadfast and unwavering, listen closely with your brothers, for I shall recount the tale of a prince who was even more miserable than you."' ।। 3-49-38 ।।

निषधेषु महीपालॊ वीरसेन इति सम ह तस्य पुत्रॊ ऽभवन नाम्ना नलॊ धर्मार्थदर्शिवान ।। ३-४९-३९ ।।

sanskrit

'There was a renowned king among the Nishadhas named Virasena. He had a son named Nala, who was well-versed in the principles of virtue and wealth.' ।। 3-49-39 ।।

niSadheSu mahIpAlò vIrasena iti sama ha tasya putrò 'bhavana nAmnA nalò dharmArthadarzivAna || 3-49-39 ||

स निकृत्या जितॊ राजा पुष्करेणेति नः शरुतम वनवासम अदुःखार्हॊ भार्यया नयवसत सह ।। ३-४९-४० ।।

'We have heard that the king was deceitfully defeated by Pushkara. Afflicted by misfortune, he lived in the forest with his wife.' ।। 3-49-40 ।।
