आश्वस्तं चैनम आसीनम उपासीनॊ युधिष्ठिरः अभिप्रेक्ष्य महाबाहुः कृपणं बह्व अभाषत ।। ३-४९-३१ ।।

sanskrit

'Once the sage was seated and refreshed, the mighty-armed Yudhishthira took his place beside him. Gazing up at the sage, he spoke to him in a voice filled with deep sorrow.' ।। 3-49-31 ।।

english translation

AzvastaM cainama AsInama upAsInò yudhiSThiraH abhiprekSya mahAbAhuH kRpaNaM bahva abhASata || 3-49-31 ||

अक्षद्यूतेन भगवन धनं राज्यं च मे हृतम आहूय निकृतिप्रज्ञैः कितवैर अक्षकॊविदैः ।। ३-४९-३२ ।।

sanskrit

'O holy one, I have been stripped of my wealth and kingdom by cunning gamblers skilled in the art of dice. I am no expert in this game and am unfamiliar with deceit.' ।। 3-49-32 ।।

english translation

akSadyUtena bhagavana dhanaM rAjyaM ca me hRtama AhUya nikRtiprajJaiH kitavaira akSakòvidaiH || 3-49-32 ||

अनक्ष जञस्य हि सतॊ निकृत्या पापनिश्चयैः भार्या च मे सभां नीता पराणेभ्यॊ ऽपि गरीयसी ।। ३-४९-३३ ।।

sanskrit

'Sinful men, using deceitful tactics, defeated me in the game. They even brought my wife, who is more precious to me than life itself, into the public assembly.' ।। 3-49-33 ।।

english translation

anakSa jaJasya hi satò nikRtyA pApanizcayaiH bhAryA ca me sabhAM nItA parANebhyò 'pi garIyasI || 3-49-33 ||

अस्ति राजा मया कश चिद अल्पभाग्यतरॊ भुवि भवता दृष्टपूर्वॊ वा शरुतपूर्वॊ ऽपि वा भवेत न मत्तॊ दुःखिततरः पुमान अस्तीति मे मतिः ।। ३-४९-३४ ।।

sanskrit

'Is there any king on this earth more unfortunate than I? Have you ever seen or heard of such a fate? To me, it seems there is no one more wretched than I.' ।। 3-49-34 ।।

english translation

asti rAjA mayA kaza cida alpabhAgyatarò bhuvi bhavatA dRSTapUrvò vA zarutapUrvò 'pi vA bhaveta na mattò duHkhitataraH pumAna astIti me matiH || 3-49-34 ||

[ब] यद बरवीषि महाराज न मत्तॊ विद्यते कव चित अल्पभाग्यतरः कश चित पुमान अस्तीति पाण्डव ।। ३-४९-३५ ।।

sanskrit

'Vrihadaswa replied, "O Maharaja, when you speak, there is no one who does not possess some measure of intelligence. Indeed, even the most unfortunate among men has some degree of wisdom."' ।। 3-49-35 ।।
