अर्थार्थी पुरुषॊ राजन बृहन्तं धर्मम ऋच्छति अर्थम ऋच्छति कामार्थी न कामाद अन्यम ऋच्छती ।। ३-३४-३१ ।।

sanskrit

'He who seeks wealth pursues a great measure of virtue to ensure his success. Likewise, one who desires pleasure seeks wealth to fulfill that desire.' ।। 3-34-31 ।।

english translation

arthArthI puruSò rAjana bRhantaM dharmama Rcchati arthama Rcchati kAmArthI na kAmAda anyama RcchatI || 3-34-31 ||

न हि कामेन कामॊ ऽनयः साध्यते फलम एव तत उपयॊगात फलस्येव काष्ठाद भस्मेव पण्डितः ।। ३-३४-३२ ।।

sanskrit

'Pleasure, however, yields nothing beyond itself. One pleasure cannot lead to another, for it is its own end—just as wood may produce ashes, but those ashes give nothing in return.' ।। 3-34-32 ।।

english translation

na hi kAmena kAmò 'nayaH sAdhyate phalama eva tata upayògAta phalasyeva kASThAda bhasmeva paNDitaH || 3-34-32 ||

इमाञ शकुनिकान राजन हन्ति वैतंसिकॊ यथा एतद रूपम अधर्मस्य भूतेषु च विहिंसताम ।। ३-३४-३३ ।।

sanskrit

'And, O king, just as a hunter kills the birds we see, so does sin destroy the creatures of the world.' ।। 3-34-33 ।।

english translation

imAJa zakunikAna rAjana hanti vaitaMsikò yathA etada rUpama adharmasya bhUteSu ca vihiMsatAma || 3-34-33 ||

कामाल लॊभाच च धर्मस्य परवृत्तिं यॊ न पश्यति स वध्यः सर्वभूतानां परेत्य चेह च दुर्मतिः ।। ३-३४-३४ ।।

sanskrit

'Therefore, one who, misled by pleasure or greed, fails to recognize the essence of virtue, deserves to be condemned by all and becomes wretched both in this life and the next.' ।। 3-34-34 ।।

english translation

kAmAla lòbhAca ca dharmasya paravRttiM yò na pazyati sa vadhyaH sarvabhUtAnAM paretya ceha ca durmatiH || 3-34-34 ||

वयक्तं ते विदितॊ राजन्न अर्थॊ दरव्यपरिग्रहः परकृतिं चापि वेत्थास्य विकृतिं चापि भूयसीम ।। ३-३४-३५ ।।

sanskrit

'It is evident, O king, that you understand how pleasure arises from the possession of various objects of enjoyment. You also recognize their usual states as well as the significant transformations they undergo.' ।। 3-34-35 ।।

vayaktaM te viditò rAjanna arthò daravyaparigrahaH parakRtiM cApi vetthAsya vikRtiM cApi bhUyasIma || 3-34-35 ||
