न ते जानामि यत कार्यं नाभिजानामि काङ्क्षितम कौतूहलं महज जातं साध्वसं चागतं मम ॥ ३-२९७-१६ ॥
'I do not know what thy purpose may be, nor do I understand thy intent. Therefore, a great curiosity—and fear as well—has taken hold of me.' ॥ 3-297-16 ॥
english translation
na te jAnAmi yata kAryaM nAbhijAnAmi kAGkSitama kautUhalaM mahaja jAtaM sAdhvasaM cAgataM mama ॥ 3-297-16 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptयेनास्म्य उद्विग्नहृदयः समुत्पन्न शिरॊ जवरः पृच्छामि भगवंस तस्मात कॊ भवान इह तिष्ठति ॥ ३-२९७-१७ ॥
'My mind is deeply agitated, and my head burns with pain. Therefore, O venerable one, I ask thee—who art thou that standest here?' ॥ 3-297-17 ॥

yenAsmya udvignahRdayaH samutpanna zirò javaraH pRcchAmi bhagavaMsa tasmAta kò bhavAna iha tiSThati ॥ 3-297-17 ॥

'Hearing this, the Yaksha said: "Blessings upon thee! I am a Yaksha, not a mere water-dwelling bird. It is I who have brought down all these mighty brothers of thine, endowed with great strength."' ॥ 3-297-18 ॥

[yaksa] yakSò 'hama asmi bhadraM te nAsmi pakSI jale caraH mayaite nihatAH sarve bharAtarasa te mahaujasaH ॥ 3-297-18 ॥

'Vaiśampāyana continued: Hearing those ominous and harshly worded words, O king, Yudhishthira approached the Yaksha who had uttered them, and stood before him with composed resolve.' ॥ 3-297-19 ॥

[vai] tatasa tAma azivAM zarutvA vAcaM sa paruSAkSarAma yakSasya baruvatò rAjanna upakramya tadA sathitaH ॥ 3-297-19 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptविरूपाक्षं महाकायं यक्षं तालसमुच्छ्रयम जवलनार्कप्रतीकाशम अधृष्यं पर्वतॊपमम ॥ ३-२९७-२० ॥
'And that bull among the Bharatas beheld the Yaksha—misshapen-eyed and massive-bodied, towering like a palmyra tree, blazing like fire or the sun, unapproachable and vast as a mountain.' ॥ 3-297-20 ॥
