[वै] एतस्मिन्न एव काले तु धृतराष्ट्रस्य वै सखा सूतॊ ऽधिरथ इत्य एव सदारॊ जाह्नवीं ययौ ॥ ३-२९३-१ ॥
'Vaiśampāyana said: It so happened that at that very time, a Suta named Adhiratha — a friend of Dhritarashtra — came to the river Ganga, accompanied by his wife.' ॥ 3-293-1 ॥
english translation
तस्य भार्याभवद राजन रूपेणासदृशी भुवि राधा नाम महाभागा न सा पुत्रम अविन्दत अपत्यार्थे परं यत्नम अकरॊच च विशेषतः ॥ ३-२९३-२ ॥
'And, O King, his wife, named Rādhā, was unmatched in beauty upon the earth. Though that highly blessed lady had made great efforts to obtain a son, she had remained childless, O subduer of foes.' ॥ 3-293-2 ॥
english translation
सा ददर्शाथ मञ्जूषाम उह्यमानां यदृच्छया दत्तरक्षा परतिसराम अन्वालभन शॊभिताम ऊर्मी तरङ्गैर जाह्नव्याः समानीताम उपह्वरम ॥ ३-२९३-३ ॥
'And as she reached the river Ganga, she beheld a box drifting along with the current. Well-guarded and adorned with fragrant unguents, it was a graceful chest, brought to the shore by the surging waves of the Jahnavi.' ॥ 3-293-3 ॥
english translation
सा तां कौतूहलात पराप्तां गराहयाम आस भामिनी ततॊ निवेदयाम आस सूतस्याधिरथस्य वै ॥ ३-२९३-४ ॥
'Moved by curiosity, the lady had the box retrieved. She then informed Adhiratha, the charioteer, of all that had occurred.' ॥ 3-293-4 ॥

स ताम उद्धृत्य मञ्जूषाम उत्सार्य जलम अन्तिकात यन्त्रैर उद्घाटयाम आस यॊ ऽपश्यत तत्र बालकम ॥ ३-२९३-५ ॥
'Hearing her words, Adhiratha brought the box up from the water’s edge and opened it with the help of tools.' ॥ 3-293-5 ॥
