ततः सत्यवतः कायात पाशबद्धं वशंगतम अङ्गुष्ठ मात्रं पुरुषं निश्चकर्ष यमॊ बलात ॥ ३-२८१-१६ ॥
'Saying this, Yama, by sheer force, drew forth from Satyavan’s body a person no larger than a thumb—bound in his noose and completely subdued.' ॥ 3-281-16 ॥
english translation
ततः समुद्धृतप्राणं गतश्वासं हतप्रभम निर्विचेष्टं शरीरं तद बभूवाप्रियदर्शनम ॥ ३-२८१-१७ ॥
'And when Satyavan's life had been drawn out, his body—breathless, bereft of luster, and motionless—became a sorrowful and lifeless sight to behold.' ॥ 3-281-17 ॥

यमस तु तं तथा बद्ध्वा परयातॊ दक्षिणामुखः सावित्री चापि दुःखार्ता यमम एवान्वगच्छत नियमव्रतसंसिद्धा महाभागा पतिव्रता ॥ ३-२८१-१८ ॥
'And having bound Satyavan’s vital essence, Yama set forth toward the south. Thereupon, Savitri—her heart heavy with grief, yet steadfast in her devotion—began to follow him. She, the exalted one, ever loyal to her husband, had perfected the path of sacred vows.' ॥ 3-281-18 ॥

[यम] निवर्त गच्छ सावित्रि कुरुष्वास्यौर्ध्वदेहिकम कृतं भर्तुस तवयानृण्यं यावद गम्यं गतं तवया ॥ ३-२८१-१९ ॥
'Thereupon Yama said, "Desist, O Savitri. Return, and perform the funeral rites of thy husband. All obligations to him have been fulfilled by thee, and thou hast followed him as far as it is permitted to go."' ॥ 3-281-19 ॥

[सावित्री] यत्र मे नीयते भर्ता सवयं वा यत्र गच्छति मयापि तत्र गन्तव्यम एष धर्मः सनातनः ॥ ३-२८१-२० ॥
'Savitri replied, "Wherever my husband is taken, or wherever he goeth of his own will, there shall I follow—for this is the eternal law."' ॥ 3-281-20 ॥
