दैवतं तवाभिजानामि वपुर एतद धयमानुषम कामया बरूहि मे देवकस तवं किं च चिकीर्षसि ॥ ३-२८१-११ ॥

'Beholding this superhuman form of thine, I take thee for a deity. If it pleases thee, O divine one, tell me—who art thou, and what is it that thou intendest to do?' ॥ 3-281-11 ॥

english translation

daivataM tavAbhijAnAmi vapura etada dhayamAnuSama kAmayA barUhi me devakasa tavaM kiM ca cikIrSasi ॥ 3-281-11 ॥

[यम] पतिव्रतासि सावित्रि तथैव च तपॊऽनविता अतस तवाम अभिभाषामि विद्धि मां तवं शुभे यमम ॥ ३-२८१-१२ ॥

'Thereupon Yama replied, "O Savitri, thou art ever devoted to thy husband, and endowed as well with the power of ascetic merit. For this reason do I converse with thee. Know me, O auspicious one, to be Yama."' ॥ 3-281-12 ॥

[yama] pativratAsi sAvitri tathaiva ca tapò'navitA atasa tavAma abhibhASAmi viddhi mAM tavaM zubhe yamama ॥ 3-281-12 ॥

अयं ते सत्यवान भर्ता कषीणायुः पार्थिवात्मजः नेष्याम्य एनम अहं बद्ध्वा विद्ध्य एतन मे चिकीर्षितम ॥ ३-२८१-१३ ॥

'This husband of thine, Satyavan—the son of a king—hath reached the end of his days. Therefore, I shall bind him with this noose and take him away. Know this to be my purpose.' ॥ 3-281-13 ॥

ayaM te satyavAna bhartA kaSINAyuH pArthivAtmajaH neSyAmya enama ahaM baddhvA viddhya etana me cikIrSitama ॥ 3-281-13 ॥

[मार्क] इत्य उक्त्वा पितृराजस तां भगवान सवं चिकीर्षितम यथावत सर्वम आख्यातुं तत्प्रियार्थं परचक्रमे ॥ ३-२८१-१४ ॥

'Markandeya continued, 'Thus spoken to by her, the glorious lord of the Pitris, wishing to gratify her, proceeded to disclose his intentions to her in full and with perfect truth.'' ॥ 3-281-14 ॥

[mArka] itya uktvA pitRrAjasa tAM bhagavAna savaM cikIrSitama yathAvata sarvama AkhyAtuM tatpriyArthaM paracakrame ॥ 3-281-14 ॥

अयं हि धर्मसंयुक्तॊ रूपवान गुणसागरः नार्हॊ मत पुरुषैर नेतुम अतॊ ऽसमि सवयम आगतः ॥ ३-२८१-१५ ॥

'And Yama said, "This prince is endowed with virtue, beauty, and a wealth of noble qualities. He is not one who deserves to be taken away by my emissaries—therefore, I have come in person."' ॥ 3-281-15 ॥

ayaM hi dharmasaMyuktò rUpavAna guNasAgaraH nArhò mata puruSaira netuma atò 'sami savayama AgataH ॥ 3-281-15 ॥
