[वै] परायॊपविष्टं राजानं दुर्यॊधनम अमर्षणम उवाच सान्त्वयन राजञ शकुनिः सौबलस तदा ॥ ३-२३९-१ ॥
'Vaisampayana said, "Seeing King Duryodhana, unable to endure the insult and resolved to give up his life by fasting, Shakuni, the son of Suvala, spoke to console him."' ॥ 3-239-1 ॥
english translation
सम्यग उक्तं हि कर्णेन तच छरुतं कौरव तवया मयाहृतां शरियं सफीतां मॊहात समपहाय किम तवम अबुद्ध्या नृप वरप्राणान उत्स्रष्टुम इच्छसि ॥ ३-२३९-२ ॥
'Shakuni said, "O son of the Kuru race, you have just heard Karna’s words, and they are indeed full of wisdom. Why, then, in your folly, would you abandon the great prosperity I have secured for you and throw away your life today, surrendering to weakness?"' ॥ 3-239-2 ॥
english translation
अद्य चाप्य अवगच्छामि न वृद्धाः सेवितास तवया यः समुत्पतितं हर्षं दैन्यं वा न नियच्छति स नश्यति शरियं पराप्य पात्रम आमम इवाम्भसि ॥ ३-२३९-३ ॥
'It seems to me that you have never sought the counsel of the wise. One who cannot withstand the sudden surge of joy or grief is doomed, even if he has gained prosperity—like an unbaked clay pot that dissolves in water.' ॥ 3-239-3 ॥
english translation
अतिभीरुम अतिक्लीबं दीर्घसूत्रं परमादिनम वयसनाद विषयाक्रान्तं न भजन्ति नृपं शरियः ॥ ३-२३९-४ ॥
'A king who lacks courage, who has no trace of manliness, who is a slave to procrastination, who acts without discretion, and who is addicted to indulgence is rarely respected by his subjects.' ॥ 3-239-4 ॥
english translation
सत्कृतस्य हि ते शॊकॊ विपरीते कथं भवेत मा कृतं शॊभनं पार्थैः शॊकम आलम्ब्य नाशय ॥ ३-२३९-५ ॥
'Having been so greatly favored, what is the cause of this unreasonable grief of yours? Do not let this noble act of the sons of Pritha go in vain by giving in to such sorrow.' ॥ 3-239-5 ॥
