निकृत्तयॊधनागाश्वं कृत्तायुध महारथम दानवैर अर्दितं सैन्यं देवानां विमुखं बभौ ॥ ३-२२१-३६ ॥

'The Danavas wreaked havoc, cutting down soldiers, horses, elephants, chariots, and weapons. The celestial troops then seemed as though they were on the verge of retreating from the enemy.' ॥ 3-221-36 ॥

english translation

असुरैर वध्यमानं तत पावकैर इव काननम अपतद दुग्ध भूयिष्ठं महाद्रुम वनं यथा ॥ ३-२२१-३७ ॥

'Many of them fell, slain by the Asuras, like large trees in a forest consumed by a raging fire.' ॥ 3-221-37 ॥

english translation

ते विभिन्नशिरॊ देहाः परच्यवन्ते दिवौकसः न नाथम अध्यगच्छन्त वध्यमाना महारणे ॥ ३-२२१-३८ ॥

'The dwellers of heaven fell, their heads severed from their bodies, and with none to guide them in that dreadful battle, they were slaughtered by the enemy.' ॥ 3-221-38 ॥

english translation

अथ तद विद्रुतं सैन्यं दृष्ट्वा देवः पुरंदरः आश्वासयन्न उवाचेदं बलवद दानवार्दितम ॥ ३-२२१-३९ ॥

'Then the god Purandara (Indra), the slayer of Vala, seeing that the army was wavering and hard-pressed by the Asuras, sought to rally them with these words:' ॥ 3-221-39 ॥

english translation

भयं तयजत भद्रं वः शूराः शस्त्राणि गृह्णत कुरुध्वं विक्रमे बुद्धिं मा वः का चिद वयथा भवेत ॥ ३-२२१-४० ॥

'Do not be afraid, O heroes! May success crown your efforts! Take up your arms, resolve to act with courage, and you will face no more misfortune.' ॥ 3-221-40 ॥
