[वै] शरुत्वेमां धर्मसंयुक्तां धर्मराजः कथां शुभाम पुनः पप्रच्छ तम ऋषिं मार्कण्डेयं तपस्विनम ॥ ३-२०७-१ ॥

'Vaisampayana continued, "The virtuous King Yudhishthira, having listened to this excellent discourse on righteousness, once again spoke to the sage Markandeya, saying ."' ॥ 3-207-1 ॥

[vai] zarutvemAM dharmasaMyuktAM dharmarAjaH kathAM zubhAma punaH papraccha tama RSiM mArkaNDeyaM tapasvinama ॥ 3-207-1 ॥

[य] कथम अग्निर वनं यातः कथं चाप्य अङ्गिराः पुरा नष्टे ऽगनौ हव्यम अवहद अग्निर भूत्वा महान ऋषिः ॥ ३-२०७-२ ॥

'Why did the fire-god conceal himself in water in ancient times, and why did Angiras, of great brilliance, act as the fire-god, offering oblations during his dissolution?' ॥ 3-207-2 ॥

english translation

[ya] kathama agnira vanaM yAtaH kathaM cApya aGgirAH purA naSTe 'ganau havyama avahada agnira bhUtvA mahAna RSiH ॥ 3-207-2 ॥

अग्निर यदा तव एक एव बहुत्वं चास्य कर्मसु दृश्यते भगवन सर्वम एतद इच्छामि वेदितुम ॥ ३-२०७-३ ॥

'There is only one fire, yet it appears to divide into many, according to the nature of its actions. O worshipful sir, I eagerly wish to be enlightened on all these matters.' ॥ 3-207-3 ॥

agnira yadA tava eka eva bahutvaM cAsya karmasu dRzyate bhagavana sarvama etada icchAmi vedituma ॥ 3-207-3 ॥

कुमारश च यथॊत्पन्नॊ यथा चाग्नेः सुतॊ ऽभवत यथा रुद्राच च संभूतॊ गङ्गायां कृत्तिकासु च ॥ ३-२०७-४ ॥

'How Kumara was born, how he came to be known as the son of Agni (the fire-god), and how he was begotten by Rudra, as well as by Ganga and the Krittikas.' ॥ 3-207-4 ॥

'O son of Bhrigu, eager with curiosity, I wish to hear the full account from you, exactly as it happened, O great sage.' ॥ 3-207-5 ॥
