तस्मात सनेहं सवपक्षेभ्यॊ मित्रेभ्यॊ धनसंचयात सवशरीरसमुत्थं तु जञानेन विनिवर्तयेत ।। ३-२-३१ ।।

sanskrit

'Therefore, one should avoid placing affection on friends or material wealth. Likewise, self-love should be extinguished through knowledge.' ।। 3-2-31 ।।

english translation

tasmAta sanehaM savapakSebhyò mitrebhyò dhanasaMcayAta savazarIrasamutthaM tu jaJAnena vinivartayeta || 3-2-31 ||

जञानान्वितेषु मुख्येषु शास्त्रज्ञेषु कृतात्मसु न तेषु सज्जते सनेहः पद्मपत्रेष्व इवॊदकम ।। ३-२-३२ ।।

sanskrit

'Just as a lotus leaf remains untouched by water, those who distinguish between the ephemeral and the eternal, who pursue the eternal truth, are dedicated to the scriptures, and are purified by knowledge, remain unaffected by affection.' ।। 3-2-32 ।।

english translation

jaJAnAnviteSu mukhyeSu zAstrajJeSu kRtAtmasu na teSu sajjate sanehaH padmapatreSva ivòdakama || 3-2-32 ||

रागाभिभूतः पुरुषः कामेन परिकृष्यते इच्छा संजायते तस्य ततस तृष्णा परवर्तते ।। ३-२-३३ ।।

'A person influenced by affection is tormented by desire, and from this desire arises an increasing thirst for worldly possessions.' ।। 3-2-33 ।।

english translation

rAgAbhibhUtaH puruSaH kAmena parikRSyate icchA saMjAyate tasya tatasa tRSNA paravartate || 3-2-33 ||

तृष्णा हि सर्वपापिष्ठा नित्यॊद्वेग करी नृणाम अधर्मबहुला चैव घॊरा पापानुबन्धिनी ।। ३-२-३४ ।।

'This thirst is sinful and regarded as the root of all anxieties. It is a dreadful craving that leads to unrighteous actions.' ।। 3-2-34 ।।

tRSNA hi sarvapApiSThA nityòdvega karI nRNAma adharmabahulA caiva ghòrA pApAnubandhinI || 3-2-34 ||

या दुस्त्यजा दुर्मतिभिर या न जीर्यति जीर्यतः यॊ ऽसौ पराणान्तिकॊ रॊगस तां तृष्णां तयजतः सुखम ।। ३-२-३५ ।।

'True happiness belongs to those who can renounce this thirst—a thirst that the wicked cannot relinquish, which does not diminish with the body's decay, and which is indeed a fatal disease.' ।। 3-2-35 ।।

yA dustyajA durmatibhira yA na jIryati jIryataH yò 'sau parANAntikò rògasa tAM tRSNAM tayajataH sukhama || 3-2-35 ||
