[वै] मार्कण्डेयं महात्मानम ऊचुः पाण्डुसुतास तदा माहात्म्यं दविजमुख्यानां शरॊतुम इच्छाम कथ्यताम ॥ ३-१८२-१ ॥
'Vaisampayana continued, "The sons of Pandu, with eager hearts, spoke to the high-souled Markandeya, saying, 'O revered one, we wish to hear about the greatness of the Brahmanas. Please, tell us of it!'"' ॥ 3-182-1 ॥
english translation
[vai] mArkaNDeyaM mahAtmAnama UcuH pANDusutAsa tadA mAhAtmyaM davijamukhyAnAM zaròtuma icchAma kathyatAma ॥ 3-182-1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptएवम उक्तः स भगवान मार्कण्डेयॊ महातपः उवाच सुमहातेजा सर्वशास्त्रविशारदः ॥ ३-१८२-२ ॥
'Thus addressed, the Lord Markandeya, the great ascetic, replied with great radiance, being well-versed in all the scriptures.' ॥ 3-182-2 ॥

evama uktaH sa bhagavAna mArkaNDeyò mahAtapaH uvAca sumahAtejA sarvazAstravizAradaH ॥ 3-182-2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptहैहयानां कुलकरॊ राजा परपुरंजयः कुमारॊ रूपसंपन्नॊ मृगयाम अचरद बली ॥ ३-१८२-३ ॥
'A strong-limbed, handsome young prince of the Haihaya dynasty, a conqueror of hostile cities, once set out on a hunt.' ॥ 3-182-3 ॥

haihayAnAM kulakarò rAjA parapuraMjayaH kumArò rUpasaMpannò mRgayAma acarada balI ॥ 3-182-3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptचरमाणस तु सॊ ऽरण्ये तृणवीरुत समावृते कृष्णाजिनॊत्तरासङ्गं ददर्श मुनिम अन्तिके स तेन निहतॊ ऽरण्ये मन्यमानेन वै मृगम ॥ ३-१८२-४ ॥
'While roaming through a wilderness of towering trees and dense thickets, he spotted a figure in the distance— a sage, clad in the skin of a black antelope. Mistaking him for a deer, the prince struck him down.' ॥ 3-182-4 ॥

caramANasa tu sò 'raNye tRNavIruta samAvRte kRSNAjinòttarAsaGgaM dadarza munima antike sa tena nihatò 'raNye manyamAnena vai mRgama ॥ 3-182-4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptवयथितः कर्म तत कृत्वा शॊकॊपहतचेतनः जगाम हैहयानां वै सकाशं परथितात्मनाम ॥ ३-१८२-५ ॥
'Grieved by his actions and overwhelmed with sorrow, his senses paralysed, he went to the more distinguished chiefs of the Haihaya clan.' ॥ 3-182-5 ॥

vayathitaH karma tata kRtvA zòkòpahatacetanaH jagAma haihayAnAM vai sakAzaM parathitAtmanAma ॥ 3-182-5 ॥
