अत्र चापि नरव्याघ्र मनॊ जन्तॊर विधीयते तस्माद युगपद अस्यात्र गरहणं नॊपपद्यते ।। ३-१७८-२१ ।।

sanskrit

'O most valiant of men, the mind of living beings is the root of all perception, and thus it can only be aware of one thing at a time.' ।। 3-178-21 ।।

english translation

atra cApi naravyAghra manò jantòra vidhIyate tasmAda yugapada asyAtra garahaNaM nòpapadyate || 3-178-21 ||

स आत्मा पुरुषव्याघ्र भरुवॊर अन्तरम आश्रितः दरव्येषु सृजते बुद्धिं विविधेषु परावरम ।। ३-१७८-२२ ।।

sanskrit

'That Self (ātmā), O tiger among men, dwells between the eyebrows, It creates understanding/intelligence (buddhi) regarding various objects, both high and low.' ।। 3-178-22 ।।

english translation

sa AtmA puruSavyAghra bharuvòra antarama AzritaH daravyeSu sRjate buddhiM vividheSu parAvarama || 3-178-22 ||

बुद्धेर उत्तरकालं च वेदना दृश्यते बुधैः एष वै राजशार्दूल विधिः कषेत्रज्ञभावनः ।। ३-१७८-२३ ।।

sanskrit

'What the Yogins perceive through the action of the intellect is, in turn, the manifestation of the soul's activity.' ।। 3-178-23 ।।

english translation

buddhera uttarakAlaM ca vedanA dRzyate budhaiH eSa vai rAjazArdUla vidhiH kaSetrajJabhAvanaH || 3-178-23 ||

[य] मनसॊ चापि बुद्धेश च बरूहि मे लक्षणं परम एतद अध्यात्मविदुषां परं कार्यं विधीयते ।। ३-१७८-२४ ।।

sanskrit

'Yudhishthira said, 'Please describe the distinguishing characteristics of the mind and the intellect. Understanding this is considered the primary duty of those who meditate on the Supreme Spirit.'' ।। 3-178-24 ।।

[ya] manasò cApi buddheza ca barUhi me lakSaNaM parama etada adhyAtmaviduSAM paraM kAryaM vidhIyate || 3-178-24 ||

[सर्प] बुद्धिर आत्मानुगा तात उत्पातेन विधीयते तद आश्रिता हि संज्ञैषा विधिस तस्यैषणे भवेत ।। ३-१७८-२५ ।।

sanskrit

'The snake replied, "Through illusion, the soul becomes subordinate to the intellect. Although the intellect is ultimately governed by the soul, it temporarily takes on the role of directing the soul."' ।। 3-178-25 ।।

[sarpa] buddhira AtmAnugA tAta utpAtena vidhIyate tada AzritA hi saMjJaiSA vidhisa tasyaiSaNe bhaveta || 3-178-25 ||
