[य] शब्दे सपर्शे च रूपे च तथैव रसगन्धयॊः तस्याधिष्ठानम अव्यग्रं बरूहि सर्पयथातथम ॥ ३-१७८-१६ ॥
'Yudhishthira asked, "O serpent, please tell me clearly and without any confusion how the disembodied spirit becomes aware of sound, touch, form, flavor, and scent."' ॥ 3-178-16 ॥
english translation
किं न गृह्णासि विषयान युगपत तवं महामते एतावद उच्यतां चॊक्तं सर्वं पन्नगसत्तम ॥ ३-१७८-१७ ॥
'O wise one, do you not perceive them all at once through the senses? Please, O best of serpents, answer all these questions.' ॥ 3-178-17 ॥
english translation
[सर्प] यद आत्मद्रव्यम आयुष्मन देहसंश्रयणान्वितम करणाधिष्ठितं भॊगान उपभुङ्क्ते यथाविधि ॥ ३-१७८-१८ ॥
'The snake replied, "O long-lived one, the entity known as the Atman (spirit), taking residence in the body and manifesting through the sense organs, becomes aware of perceptible objects in due course."' ॥ 3-178-18 ॥
english translation
जञानं चैवात्र बुद्धिश च मनॊ च भरतर्षभ तस्य भॊगाधिकरणे करणानि निबॊध मे ॥ ३-१७८-१९ ॥
'Knowledge, intellect/understanding, and mind, O best of Bharatas, Listen to me [explain] their instruments/organs in relation to experience/enjoyment.' ॥ 3-178-19 ॥
english translation
मनसा तात पर्येति करमशॊ विषयान इमान विषयायतनस्थेन भूतात्मा कषेत्रनिःसृतः ॥ ३-१७८-२० ॥
'O my son, the eternal spirit, leaving its own sphere and, aided by the mind, acts through the senses—those receptacles of all perceptions—and thereby perceives things such as sound, form, flavor, and so on.' ॥ 3-178-20 ॥
