स माम अपृच्छत कौन्तेय कवासि गन्ता बरवीहि मे तस्मा अवितथं सर्वम अब्रुवं कुरुनन्दन ॥ ३-१६३-११ ॥
'And he asked me, saying, 'O son of Kunti, whither are you bound?' Thereupon, O descendant of the Kurus, I truthfully recounted everything to him.' ॥ 3-163-11 ॥
english translation
स तथ्यं मम तच छरुत्वा बराह्मणॊ राजसत्तम अपूजयत मां राजन परीतिमांश चाभवन मयि ॥ ३-१६३-१२ ॥
'And, O best of kings, upon hearing the true account, the Brahmin became well-pleased with me, and, O king, he praised me.' ॥ 3-163-12 ॥
english translation
ततॊ माम अब्रवीत परीतस तप आतिष्ठ भारत तपस्वी नचिरेण तवं दरक्ष्यसे विबुधाधिपम ॥ ३-१६३-१३ ॥
'Then the Brahmin, pleased with me, said, 'O Bhārata, engage in austerities. Through your penances, you will soon behold the lord of the celestials.'' ॥ 3-163-13 ॥

ततॊ ऽहं वचनात तस्य गिरिम आरुह्य शैशिरम तपॊ ऽतप्यं महाराज मासं मूलफलाशनः ॥ ३-१६३-१४ ॥
'Following his advice, I ascended the Himavan, and, O mighty king, began to practice penance, subsisting on fruits and roots during the first month.' ॥ 3-163-14 ॥

दवितीयश चापि मे मासॊ जलं भक्षयतॊ गतः निराहारस तृतीये ऽथ मासे पाण्डवनन्दन ॥ ३-१६३-१५ ॥
'I spent the second month subsisting on water, and in the third month, O Pandava, I completely abstained from food.' ॥ 3-163-15 ॥
