यवक्रीतस्य यत तीर्थम उचितं शौचकर्मणि भागीरथ्यां तत्र सेतुं वालुकाभिश च चारसः ।। ३-१३५-३१ ।।

sanskrit

'Because Yavakri, the foremost of the Brahmanas, paid no heed to Indra's words, the god began to fill the Ganga with sand.' ।। 3-135-31 ।।

english translation

yavakrItasya yata tIrthama ucitaM zaucakarmaNi bhAgIrathyAM tatra setuM vAlukAbhiza ca cArasaH || 3-135-31 ||

hk transliteration

यदास्य वदतॊ वाक्यं न सचक्रे दविजॊत्तमः वालुकाभिस ततः शक्रॊ गङ्गां समभिपूरयन ।। ३-१३५-३२ ।।

sanskrit

'Without pause, he repeatedly tossed handfuls of sand into the Bhagirathi, constructing a dam, thereby drawing the attention of the sage.' ।। 3-135-32 ।।

english translation

yadAsya vadatò vAkyaM na sacakre davijòttamaH vAlukAbhisa tataH zakrò gaGgAM samabhipUrayana || 3-135-32 ||

hk transliteration

वालुका मुष्टिम अनिशं भागीरथ्यां वयसर्जयत सेतुम अभ्यारभच छक्रॊ यवक्रीतं निदर्शयन ।। ३-१३५-३३ ।।

sanskrit

'Indra, continuing to throw handfuls of sand into the Bhagirathi, began constructing the dam, all the while directing it toward Yavakri to make him take notice.' ।। 3-135-33 ।।

english translation

vAlukA muSTima anizaM bhAgIrathyAM vayasarjayata setuma abhyArabhaca chakrò yavakrItaM nidarzayana || 3-135-33 ||

तं ददर्श यवक्रीस तु यत्नवन्तं निबन्धने परहसंश चाब्रवीद वाक्यम इदं स मुनिपुंगवः ।। ३-१३५-३४ ।।

sanskrit

'When that foremost of sages, Yavakri, saw Indra so diligently engaged in constructing the dam, he burst into laughter and spoke the following words.' ।। 3-135-34 ।।

english translation

taM dadarza yavakrIsa tu yatnavantaM nibandhane parahasaMza cAbravIda vAkyama idaM sa munipuMgavaH || 3-135-34 ||

hk transliteration

किम इदं वर्तते बरह्मन किं च ते ह चिकीर्षितम अतीव हि महान यत्नः करियते ऽयं निरर्थकः ।। ३-१३५-३५ ।।

sanskrit

'What art thou doing, O Brahmana, and what is thy purpose? Why dost thou, in vain, exert thyself so mightily?' ।। 3-135-35 ।।

english translation

kima idaM vartate barahmana kiM ca te ha cikIrSitama atIva hi mahAna yatnaH kariyate 'yaM nirarthakaH || 3-135-35 ||
