[अस्ट] यद्य अत्र वृद्धेषु कृतः परवेशॊ; युक्तं मम दवारपाल परवेष्टुम वयं हि वृद्धाश चरितव्रताश च; वेद परभावेन परवेशनार्हाः ।। ३-१३३-६ ।।

sanskrit

'Ashtavakra replied, "If this be the condition, O gatekeeper, that the door is open only to the aged, then we have the right to enter. We are indeed old, having upheld sacred vows, and possess the energy born of the Vedic knowledge."' ।। 3-133-6 ।।

english translation

[asTa] yadya atra vRddheSu kRtaH paravezò; yuktaM mama davArapAla paraveSTuma vayaM hi vRddhAza caritavratAza ca; veda parabhAvena paravezanArhAH || 3-133-6 ||

hk transliteration

शुश्रूषवश चापि जितेन्द्रियाश च; जञानागमे चापि गताः सम निष्ठाम न बाल इत्य अवमन्तव्यम आहुर; बालॊ ऽपय अग्निर दहति सपृश्यमानः ।। ३-१३३-७ ।।

sanskrit

'We have served our superiors, subdued our passions, and attained proficiency in knowledge. It is said that even boys should not be underestimated, for even a small fire burns when touched.' ।। 3-133-7 ।।

english translation

zuzrUSavaza cApi jitendriyAza ca; jaJAnAgame cApi gatAH sama niSThAma na bAla itya avamantavyama Ahura; bAlò 'paya agnira dahati sapRzyamAnaH || 3-133-7 ||

hk transliteration

[दव] सरॊ वतीम ईरय वेद जुष्टाम; एकाक्षरां बहुरूपां विराजम अङ्गात्मानं समवेक्षस्व बालं; किं शलाघसे दुर लभा वादसिद्धिः ।। ३-१३३-८ ।।

sanskrit

'Ashtavakra said: "Speak to the sacred lake, adorned with Vedic hymns, which is rich in meaning and form, and reflect upon the child within. Why then do you praise what is difficult to attain—the victory of argument?"' ।। 3-133-8 ।।

english translation

[dava] sarò vatIma Iraya veda juSTAma; ekAkSarAM bahurUpAM virAjama aGgAtmAnaM samavekSasva bAlaM; kiM zalAghase dura labhA vAdasiddhiH || 3-133-8 ||

hk transliteration

[अस्ट] न जञायते कायवृद्ध्या विवृद्धिर; यथाष्ठीला शाल्मलेः संप्रवृद्धा हरस्वॊ ऽलपकायः फलितॊ विवृद्धॊ; यश चाफलस तस्य न वृद्धभावः ।। ३-१३३-९ ।।

sanskrit

'Ashtavakra responded, "True growth cannot be judged by the mere development of the body, just as the growth of the Salmali tree’s knots does not determine its age. The tree is considered mature when, though slender and short, it bears fruit. But that which does not bear fruit is not considered to be truly grown.' ।। 3-133-9 ।।

english translation

[asTa] na jaJAyate kAyavRddhyA vivRddhira; yathASThIlA zAlmaleH saMpravRddhA harasvò 'lapakAyaH phalitò vivRddhò; yaza cAphalasa tasya na vRddhabhAvaH || 3-133-9 ||

hk transliteration

वृद्धेभ्य एवेह मतिं सम बाला; गृह्णन्ति कालेन भवन्ति वृद्धाः न हि जञानम अल्पकालेन शक्यं; कस्माद बालॊ वृद्ध इवावभाषसे ।। ३-१३३-१० ।।

sanskrit

'The warder replied, "Boys learn from the elders, and in time, they too grow old. Knowledge, indeed, cannot be attained in a short span. Why then, being but a child, do you speak as though you are an old man?"' ।। 3-133-10 ।।

english translation

vRddhebhya eveha matiM sama bAlA; gRhNanti kAlena bhavanti vRddhAH na hi jaJAnama alpakAlena zakyaM; kasmAda bAlò vRddha ivAvabhASase || 3-133-10 ||
