एतद धि मम कार्याणां परमं हृदि संस्थितम सुकृतानेन मे तुष्टिः सत्काराश च भविष्यति ॥ ३-१-३६ ॥
'This is the foremost task on which my heart is set. By fulfilling this request, you will greatly please me and show your deepest regard.' ॥ 3-1-36 ॥

[व] तथानुमन्त्रितास तेन धर्मराजेन ताः परजाः चक्रुर आर्तस्वरं घॊरं हा राजन्न इति दुःखिताः ॥ ३-१-३७ ॥
'Vaisampayana continued, "Thus exhorted by the righteous Yudhishthira, the people together raised a loud wail, crying out, 'Alas, O King!'"' ॥ 3-1-37 ॥

गुणान पार्थस्य संस्मृत्य दुःखार्ताः परमातुराः अकामाः संन्यवर्तन्त समागम्याथ पाण्डवान ॥ ३-१-३८ ॥
'Overcome with grief and remembering the virtues of the son of Pritha, they reluctantly retraced their steps, taking leave of the Pandavas.' ॥ 3-1-38 ॥

निवृत्तेषु तु पौरेषु रथान आस्थाय पाण्डवाः परजग्मुर जाह्नवीतीरे परमाणाख्यं महावटम ॥ ३-१-३९ ॥
'After the citizens had departed, the Pandavas mounted their chariots, And proceeded to the great banyan tree named Pramana on the banks of the Ganges.' ॥ 3-1-39 ॥

तं ते दिवसशेषेण वटं गत्वा तु पाण्डवाः ऊषुस तां रजनीं वीराः संस्पृश्य सलिलं शुचि उदकेनैव तां रात्रिम ऊषुस ते दुःखकर्शिताः ॥ ३-१-४० ॥
'Arriving at the site of the banyan tree towards the end of the day, the heroic sons of Pandu purified themselves by touching the sacred waters and spent the night there. Afflicted with sorrow, they sustained themselves with water alone that night.' ॥ 3-1-40 ॥
