Kaṇva said: As Mātali proceeded along his route, he happened to meet the great sage Nārada, who was going to see Varuṇa.

english translation

Nārada then said to him: “Where are you preparing to go—by your own duty as a sūta (charioteer), or under the command of Śatakratu (Indra)?”

english translation

Thus questioned by Nārada as they traveled the road, Mātali accurately related everything—his own assignment in connection with Varuṇa.

english translation

Then the sage said to him: “Let us go together. I too have set out from heaven, wishing to behold the Lord of the Waters, Varuṇa.”

english translation

“I will explain everything to you while showing you the face of the earth; and after observing there, we shall choose some excellent best, O Mātali.”
