The Blessed Lord said: Indeed it is so, as you say, O mighty-armed Pāṇḍava. All this, O Bībhatsu, depends upon the two causes of action—human effort and the factor of Daiva.

english translation

For even a fertile and well-prepared field, cultivated by a farmer, will never yield its produce without rainfall, O Kaunteya.

english translation

There, one would call irrigation the product of human exertion; and there too one would certainly observe drying up as produced by the factor of Daiva—the uncontrollable contingency.

english translation

This has been determined through reason even by earlier great-souled persons: the causes operating in the world are conjoined—both the factor of Daiva and the human factor.

english translation

I will do that to the utmost extent through human effort; but the factor of Daiva cannot, in any way, be made into an act performed by me.
