वैशंपायन उवाच । तथोक्तो वासुदेवेन नित्यमन्युरमर्षणः । सदश्ववत्समाधावद्बभाषे तदनन्तरम्॥५-७४-१॥
Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Thus addressed by Vāsudeva, Bhīma—habitually intense and intolerant of affront—responded immediately, rushing into speech like a spirited horse.
english translation
अन्यथा मां चिकीर्षन्तमन्यथा मन्यसेऽच्युत । प्रणीतभावमत्यन्तं युधि सत्यपराक्रमम्॥५-७४-२॥
O Acyuta, you intend something regarding me, yet you judge me otherwise—treating me as excessively restrained, though my prowess in disciplined battle is proven.

वेत्थ दाशार्ह सत्त्वं मे दीर्घकालं सहोषितः । उत वा मां न जानासि प्लवन्ह्रद इवाप्लवः । तस्मादप्रतिरूपाभिर्वाग्भिर्मां त्वं समर्छसि॥५-७४-३॥
O Dāśārha, you have lived with me for a long time and know my disposition. Or do you not know me—like one who can swim in a shallow pool but cannot cross a deep lake? Therefore you address me with words that do not fit.

कथं हि भीमसेनं मां जानन्कश्चन माधव । ब्रूयादप्रतिरूपाणि यथा मां वक्तुमर्हसि॥५-७४-४॥
How indeed, O Mādhava, could anyone who knows me as Bhīmasena speak words unbefitting—words such as you deem proper to address to me?
english translation
तस्मादिदं प्रवक्ष्यामि वचनं वृष्णिनन्दन । आत्मनः पौरुषं चैव बलं च न समं परैः॥५-७४-५॥
Therefore, O delight of the Vṛṣṇis, I shall declare this: my own valor and my strength are not the same as those of others.
