अहं हि पाण्डवान्हत्वा प्रशास्ता पृथिवीमिमाम् । मां वा हत्वा पाण्डुपुत्रा भोक्तारः पृथिवीमिमाम्॥५-५७-१६॥
If I slay the Pāṇḍavas, I shall rule this earth; but if they slay me, then the sons of Pāṇḍu will enjoy and govern this earth.
english translation
त्यक्तं मे जीवितं राजन्धनं राज्यं च पार्थिव । न जातु पाण्डवैः सार्धं वसेयमहमच्युत॥५-५७-१७॥
“O king, I have renounced life itself, wealth, and kingship; I will never live together with the Pāṇḍavas, O Acyuta.”
english translation
यावद्धि सूच्यास्तीक्ष्णाया विध्येदग्रेण मारिष । तावदप्यपरित्याज्यं भूमेर्नः पाण्डवान्प्रति॥५-५७-१८॥
“So long as the sharp needle’s tip can pierce, even that much of land is not to be relinquished by us to the Pāṇḍavas, sir.”
english translation
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच । सर्वान्वस्तात शोचामि त्यक्तो दुर्योधनो मया । ये मन्दमनुयास्यध्वं यान्तं वैवस्वतक्षयम्॥५-५७-१९॥
Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: “I grieve for you all, dear son. Duryodhana has been abandoned by me—and you who will follow him heedlessly as he goes toward Vaivasvata’s abode, toward death.”
english translation
रुरूणामिव यूथेषु व्याघ्राः प्रहरतां वराः । वरान्वरान्हनिष्यन्ति समेता युधि पाण्डवाः॥५-५७-२०॥
“Like tigers among herds of deer, the Pāṇḍavas—assembled in battle—will strike down the foremost among the foremost.”
