That foremost of the Kurus, aflame with resolve, struck down many of them. Thereafter, in fear, they went to this Devavrata (Bhīṣma) for refuge.

english translation

This Bhīṣma is fully capable—together with us in battle—of overcoming the foes. Therefore let your fear depart, O bull among the Bhāratas. Such indeed was the resolve of those of immeasurable vigor at that time.

english translation

Formerly the whole earth lay under the sway of the opponents. But today they are not able to defeat us in battle. Indeed, the foes are now as though their wings were clipped; and the Pāṇḍavas are said to be lacking in effective power.

english translation

O bull among the Bharatas, the political order of the earth now proceeds under my arrangement. In pleasure and in hardship alike, the kings have been brought by me into a single alignment of interest.

english translation

O scorcher of foes, those kings would even enter fire or the ocean for my sake—know this, O best of the Kurus.
