Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: A twice-born man (dvija) who studies the Ṛg hymns, the Yajus formulas, and also the Sāma-veda—if he commits wrongful acts, is he tainted by that wrongdoing, or is he not tainted?

english translation

Sanatsujāta said: O discerning one, neither ordinary Ṛg verses nor the Yajus formulas protect such a person from the wrongdoing produced by his actions. I do not speak to you falsely.

english translation

The Vedic meters (chandas) do not carry across from wrongdoing a deceptive person who lives by deception. Like birds that have grown wings abandoning the nest, the meters abandon him at the final time.

english translation

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: O discerning one, if the Vedas cannot protect a knower of the Veda, why does this ancient discourse of the brāhmaṇas still endure?

english translation

Sanatsujāta said: Austerity (tapas) practiced in this world is seen to bear its fruit elsewhere. These worlds—states of attainment—of the brāhmaṇas arise when austerity is mature and the senses are restrained.
