One should not overcome sleep by sleeping more; one should not overcome desire by pursuing a woman. One should not overcome fire by adding fuel; one should not overcome intoxicants by further drinking.

english translation

He whose friend is won by gifts, whose foes are subdued in battle by stratagem, and whose household is won over by food and drink—his life bears no true fruit.

english translation

Even those with thousands live; likewise those with hundreds live. O Dhṛtarāṣṭra, relinquish craving—for bound to it, one cannot live well in any way.

english translation

Whatever exists on earth—rice and barley, gold, cattle, and women—none of it, even in its entirety, is sufficient for a single person; seeing this, one is not deluded.

english translation

O King, I say again to you: act with impartiality among your sons—let there be equality in you, O King, toward your own and toward the sons of Pāṇḍu as well.
