A wise person should not cultivate friendship with the arrogant, the foolish, the harshly aggressive and reckless, nor with those who have departed from dharma.

english translation

One should seek as a friend one who is grateful—steadfast in dharma, truthful, not petty, firm in devotion, self-restrained, steady in steadfastness, and not given to abandoning others.

english translation

Total denial of the senses is scarcely different from death; yet excessive indulgence can wear down even those of exceptional stature.

english translation

Gentleness toward all beings, freedom from envy, forbearance, and steadiness—these, the wise say, prolong life; and so too does the absence of contempt toward one’s friends.

english translation

He who, by sound policy, seeks to recover what has been taken away—having adopted a very firm resolve—follows a vow not befitting a weak person.
