Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: This person is not autonomous in being or non-being; like a wooden puppet strung upon a thread, he is under the sway of what the Ordainer has allotted as destiny. Therefore speak—I am wholly attentive.

english translation

Vidura said: Even Bṛhaspati, if he speaks words at an inopportune time, incurs disregard for his judgment and also disrespect, O Bhārata.

english translation

One becomes liked through giving; another through agreeable speech. Yet another becomes liked through counsel supported by real capacity; whoever is liked for such reasons is indeed liked.

english translation

A disliked person is not regarded as virtuous, nor as intelligent, nor as learned. In one who is liked, actions appear auspicious; in one who is disliked, actions appear blameworthy, O Bhārata.

english translation

That is not truly a ‘loss’, O great king, which brings about growth. Here, that alone should be regarded as loss which, once acquired, leads to extensive ruin.
