For the good of a family one may relinquish a single man; for the good of a village, a family; for the good of a realm, a village; and for one’s own preservation, one may relinquish even the earth and sovereignty.

english translation

Safeguard wealth for times of crisis; safeguard one’s family even by means of wealth; and always safeguard oneself, even at the cost of family and wealth.

english translation

Even at the time of the dice calamity, O King, I spoke to you words of this kind—counsel grounded in reason. Yet, O Vaicitravīrya, it does not please you, as medicine and a wholesome regimen do not please the sick.

english translation

O King, with the Dhārtarāṣṭras you have sought to defeat the Pāṇḍavas—like crows striving to overcome peacocks with variegated plumes. Casting aside lions and siding with jackals, you will grieve when the decisive hour arrives, O lord of men.

english translation

O dear one, the master who is not ever wrathful toward a devoted servant intent on his lord’s welfare—such a lord is trusted by his servants, and they do not forsake him in times of crisis.
