Even without kinship, one who acts with the spirit of a friend is truly a kinsman; he is the friend, he the refuge, and he the proper reliance.

english translation

For a man of wavering mind who does not attend upon elders, and whose judgment is ever adrift, the making and keeping of friendships is never steady.

english translation

Material aims pass beyond one whose mind is unsteady, who lacks self-mastery and follows the rule of the senses—just as hamsas abandon a lake when it has dried up.

english translation

They flare up in anger without cause and grow calm without reason; such is the disposition of the unprincipled—like drifting, unstable clouds.

english translation

Those who, though honored and benefited, do not remain true to their friends—such ungrateful persons are shunned even by carrion-eaters, even when dead.
