A person who seeks prosperity should abandon these six faults: excessive sleep, lethargy, fear, anger, idleness, and procrastination.
english translation
A man should abandon these six, as one would abandon a damaged boat upon the ocean: a teacher who does not teach, a priest (ṛtvij) who does not study, a king who does not protect, a spouse who speaks harshly, a cowherd who prefers the village to the herd, and a barber who prefers the forest to his proper work.
english translation
(Abandon) the king who does not protect, the wife who speaks unkindly, the cowherd who longs for the village, and the barber who longs for the forest.
english translation
Yet these six qualities should never be abandoned by a man: truth, generosity (dāna), diligence free from idleness, non-malice and freedom from envy (anāsūyā), forbearance (kṣamā), and steadfastness (dhṛti).
english translation
He who gains mastery over these six enduring factors within himself—having conquered the senses—is not joined to sin, much less to harmful consequences.
