भीष्म उवाच । किं नु राधेय वाचा ते कर्म तत्स्मर्तुमर्हसि । एक एव यदा पार्थः षड्रथाञ्जितवान्युधि॥५-२१-१६॥
Bhīṣma said: O Rādheya, do you not, by your own words, deserve to recall that deed—when Pārtha alone defeated six chariot-warriors in battle?
english translation
न चेदेवं करिष्यामो यदयं ब्राह्मणोऽब्रवीत् । ध्रुवं युधि हतास्तेन भक्षयिष्याम पांसुकान्॥५-२१-१७॥
If we do not act as this brāhmaṇa has declared, then surely—struck down by him in battle—we shall be made to eat dust.

वैशंपायन उवाच । धृतराष्ट्रस्ततो भीष्ममनुमान्य प्रसाद्य च । अवभर्त्स्य च राधेयमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्॥५-२१-१८॥
Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Then Dhṛtarāṣṭra, assenting to Bhīṣma and soothing him, and after reproving Rādheya, spoke these words.

अस्मद्धितमिदं वाक्यं भीष्मः शांतनवोऽब्रवीत् । पाण्डवानां हितं चैव सर्वस्य जगतस्तथा॥५-२१-१९॥
This statement spoken by Bhīṣma, the son of Śāntanu, is beneficial to us; it is beneficial to the Pāṇḍavas as well, and likewise to the whole world.

चिन्तयित्वा तु पार्थेभ्यः प्रेषयिष्यामि संजयम् । स भवान्प्रतियात्वद्य पाण्डवानेव माचिरम्॥५-२१-२०॥
Having reflected, I shall dispatch Sañjaya to the sons of Pṛthā. Let him depart today and go to the Pāṇḍavas without delay.
