I would not even look for a moment at this bow-in-hand combatant who has come forward seeking engagement; nor would I strike him.

english translation

This vow of mine is always well-known on earth: I do not act aggressively toward a woman, toward one who was formerly a woman, and also toward one bearing a woman’s name and form.

english translation

‘I would not release arrows,’ O delight of the Kurus; for this reason, I would not bring about Śikhaṇḍin’s death.

english translation

I know this truth, dear one, concerning Śikhaṇḍin’s birth. Therefore I will not strike him in battle, even though he stands in the role of an aggressor.

english translation

If Bhīṣma were to strike a woman, he would thereby strike down his own self as well. For that reason I will not strike him, even upon seeing him stationed in the engagement.
