Drupada said, O best of the Bharatas, with courteous restraint: “Brāhmaṇa, the words you have spoken to me are on a kinsman’s behalf; the reply—my counter-statement—will be spoken by the envoy himself.”

english translation

Then Drupada, too, dispatched to the high-souled Hiraṇyavarman an envoy—a brāhmaṇa well-versed in the Vedas.

english translation

Having met then with the Daśārṇa king, he conveyed, O king, that statement which had been spoken by Drupada.

english translation

“Let a clear verification be undertaken: the youth is indeed my son. This was spoken falsely by someone; it is not to be accepted as credible.”

english translation

Then that king, having heard Drupada’s account and deliberated, dispatched excellent young women of pleasing appearance to ascertain whether Śikhaṇḍin was female or male.
