“Not from greed, not from miserliness, not from fear, and not for worldly gain would I abandon the eternal dharma—this is my settled conviction.”

english translation

Then, O king, all those sages led by Nārada—and Bhāgīrathī (Gaṅgā), my mother as well—entered the midst of the battle.

english translation

With arrows already taken up and bow in hand, and with the same firm resolve, I stood in the battle ready to fight. Then they, assembled together once more on the field, approached and addressed Rāma, Bhṛgu’s descendant.

english translation

The heart of Brahmins is not, indeed, like fresh butter that melts with ease; restrain yourself, O Bhārgava. O Rāma, O Rāma—withdraw from this battle, O best of the twice-born. For Bhīṣma cannot be subdued by you, and you, O Bhārgava, likewise cannot be subdued by Bhīṣma.

english translation

Thus speaking, all those ancestors checked the fury of the battlefield and caused Bhṛgu’s descendant (Paraśurāma) to lay down his weapon.
