Then there was there a distinguished brāhmaṇa of disciplined vows—Śaikhāvatya—advanced in austerity and a teacher of the forest-dwelling scriptural tradition (Āraṇyaka).

english translation

The great ascetic, the sage Śaikhāvatya, addressed her as she stood in distress—sighing, virtuous and still young, wholly absorbed in grief and sorrow.

english translation

Since matters stand thus, O gentle lady, what can be done by ascetics—by those fortunate, great-souled ones who dwell in the hermitage and are ever steadfast in austerity?

english translation

But she said to him, “O king, grant me your favor: here I wish to renounce the world and undertake severe, arduous austerity.”

english translation

Surely, through my own folly, I committed sinful deeds in former embodiments; this, indeed, is the certain and fixed fruit of those actions.
