दुर्योधन उवाच । किमर्थं भरतश्रेष्ठ न हन्यास्त्वं शिखण्डिनम् । उद्यतेषुमथो दृष्ट्वा समरेष्वाततायिनम्॥५-१७०-१॥
Duryodhana said: “For what reason, O best of the Bharatas, would you not strike Śikhaṇḍin, even upon seeing him in battle with weapons raised—one acting as an aggressor in combat?”
english translation
पूर्वमुक्त्वा महाबाहो पाण्डवान्सह सोमकैः । वधिष्यामीति गाङ्गेय तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह॥५-१७०-२॥
“Having earlier declared, ‘I shall neutralize the Pāṇḍavas together with the Somakas,’ O mighty-armed Gāṅgeya—tell me this, Grandfather.”
english translation
भीष्म उवाच । शृणु दुर्योधन कथां सहैभिर्वसुधाधिपैः । यदर्थं युधि संप्रेक्ष्य नाहं हन्यां शिखण्डिनम्॥५-१७०-३॥
Bhīṣma said: “Listen, Duryodhana—along with these rulers of the earth—to the account for which reason, even when seeing him in battle, I would not strike Śikhaṇḍin.”
english translation
महाराजो मम पिता शंतनुर्भरतर्षभः । दिष्टान्तं प्राप धर्मात्मा समये पुरुषर्षभ॥५-१७०-४॥
“My father, the great king Śaṃtanu, the bull among the Bharatas—righteous in nature—reached his appointed end in due time, O bull among men.”
english translation
ततोऽहं भरतश्रेष्ठ प्रतिज्ञां परिपालयन् । चित्राङ्गदं भ्रातरं वै महाराज्येऽभ्यषेचयम्॥५-१७०-५॥
“Then, O best of the Bharatas, upholding my vow, I consecrated my brother Citrāṅgada to the great kingship.”
