Agastya said: “Then, while disputing with the sages, O Vāsava, he—pressed by adharma—touched my head with his foot.”

english translation

By that deed, O Śacīpati (Indra), he was stripped of radiance and good fortune. Then I spoke to him, distressed and driven by fear.

english translation

Because you defile what the ancients established and the brahmarṣis observed—something blameless—and because you have touched a venerable one upon the head with your foot,

english translation

And because you, deluded one, have made the sages—Brahman-like and hard to approach—into bearers and compelled them to carry you, therefore you have lost your splendor and shall fall from heaven.

english translation

Fall, sinful one—cast down and with your merit exhausted—upon the earth. For ten thousand years you shall wander, bearing the form of a mighty serpent; when that term is fulfilled, you will again attain heaven.
