Bṛhaspati said: The human king Nahūṣa, empowered by the radiance of hosts of divine ṛṣis, has attained the sovereignty of the gods and grievously oppresses us all.

english translation

Indra said: How did Nahūṣa obtain the difficult-to-attain sovereignty of the gods? With what austerity (tapas) was he endowed, or what prowess does he possess, O Bṛhaspati?

english translation

Bṛhaspati said: The gods, fearful, longed for a Śakra—a ruler like you—for you had abandoned that great Indra-station. Then all assembled together: the gods, the Pitṛs, the ṛṣis, and the gatherings of Gandharvas.

english translation

They went to Nahūṣa and said there: “O Śakra, be our king, the protector of the world.” Nahūṣa replied: “I am not capable; strengthen yourselves through austerity (tapas) and through radiance (tejas).”

english translation

Thus addressed and further emboldened by the gods, Nahūṣa—of formidable power—became king. Having obtained sovereignty over the three worlds, that ill-intentioned one moved through the worlds, making ascetics his bearers as a display of domination.
