वैशंपायन उवाच । आपद्धर्मार्थकुशलो महाबुद्धिर्युधिष्ठिरः । सर्वान्भ्रातॄन्समानीय वासुदेवं च सात्वतम् । उवाच वदतां श्रेष्ठः सान्त्वपूर्वमिदं वचः॥५-१५४-६॥
Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Yudhiṣṭhira, of great intelligence and skilled in artha and dharma in times of crisis, assembled all his brothers and Vāsudeva of the Sātvata line; then, foremost among speakers, he addressed them with conciliatory words.

पर्याक्रामत सैन्यानि यत्तास्तिष्ठत दंशिताः । पितामहेन वो युद्धं पूर्वमेव भविष्यति । तस्मात्सप्तसु सेनासु प्रणेतॄन्मम पश्यत॥५-१५४-७॥
(Yudhiṣṭhira said:) Move about and inspect the forces; stand prepared and fully armed. Your first engagement will be with the Grandsire. Therefore, in the seven divisions of the army, identify commanders for me.

वासुदेव उवाच । यथार्हति भवान्वक्तुमस्मिन्काल उपस्थिते । तथेदमर्थवद्वाक्यमुक्तं ते भरतर्षभ॥५-१५४-८॥
Vāsudeva said: As is fitting for you to speak at this time, so indeed you have spoken words of true import, O bull among the Bhāratas.

रोचते मे महाबाहो क्रियतां यदनन्तरम् । नायकास्तव सेनायामभिषिच्यन्तु सप्त वै॥५-१५४-९॥
It meets with my approval, O mighty-armed one; let what follows be carried out. Let seven commanders indeed be formally appointed in your army.

वैशंपायन उवाच । ततो द्रुपदमानाय्य विराटं शिनिपुंगवम् । धृष्टद्युम्नं च पाञ्चाल्यं धृष्टकेतुं च पार्थिवम् । शिखण्डिनं च पाञ्चाल्यं सहदेवं च मागधम्॥५-१५४-१०॥
Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Thereafter he summoned Drupada; and also Virāṭa, foremost of the Śinis; Dhṛṣṭadyumna of Pāñcāla; Dhṛṣṭaketu, the king; Śikhaṇḍin of Pāñcāla; and Sahadeva of Magadha.
