Thus, having resolved upon what she deemed the best course, Kuntī set out to accomplish her purpose and went toward the Bhāgīrathī, the sacred Gaṅgā.

english translation

Then Pṛthā (Kuntī), on the bank of the Gaṅgā, heard the sound of her son’s Vedic recitation—compassionate and steadfast in truth.

english translation

As he faced east with arms raised, she stood behind him, waiting for the completion of his japa so she might carry out her purpose—herself disciplined in austerity.

english translation

Afflicted by the sun’s heat, she stood wrapped in Karṇa’s upper garment; the Kaurava wife Vārṣṇeyī was withering like a garland of lotuses.

english translation

Having completed his recitation until the sun had heated his back, he turned; seeing Kuntī, the self-restrained man approached, saluted her with joined hands, and stood in proper decorum—high-splendored, dignified, and foremost among those who uphold dharma.
