The son said: “What use is the whole earth to you, if you do not see me? What purpose do ornaments serve for you—or pleasures, or even life itself?”

english translation

The mother said: “What would we gain from those worlds attained by those who live in hostility? Rather, may we go to the worlds of the self-respecting—worlds reached by well-wishers and true friends.”

english translation

Do not follow the way of life of those forsaken by their dependents, living on others’ provisions—petty souls, devoid of steadfast resolve.

english translation

Dear son, may Brāhmaṇas and well-wishers live upheld by you—just as beings depend upon rain, and as the gods depend upon Śatakratu (Indra).

english translation

O Saṃjaya, meaningful is the life of that person upon whom all beings depend for sustenance—like reaching, in due season, a tree laden with ripe fruit.
